What’s in a name? The many remarkable meanings of ‘Kai’

Our Kai gets his name from Kairon (also spelled Chiron),  the wisest of the creatures known in Greek mythology as centaurs, commonly recognized as half man, half horse.

Kairon was considered uniquely peaceful, kind, and intelligent – a master of the healing arts and a mentor to the heroes and gods.

But as fate would have it – and despite being a gifted healer – Kairon could not heal himself.

Like the Kairon of myth, we all suffer from wounds that won’t heal, but which we can use to grow in self-knowledge and wisdom to transform our lives and the lives of others.

So when Hercules accidentally strikes him with a poisoned arrow, instead of agonizing in pain for eternity, Kairon trades his immortal life to give fire (consciousness) to mankind.

Like the Kairon of myth, we all suffer from wounds that won’t heal, but which we can use to grow in self-knowledge and wisdom to transform our lives and the lives of others. And like this hybrid human and animal, we’re all challenged not to lose touch with our basic instincts, bodies, or feelings, as we grow in conscious awareness.
